We hope to offer you a candid picture of student life, and what you should consider as you prepare your MBA application. Accepted: First, can you tell us a little about yourself – where are you from? What and where did you study as an undergraduate and when did you graduate? Ashley: I am originally from a small town in Southern Illinois called Fairview Heights. My dad was stationed at a military base near there when I was a kid, so after a few years of moving around we finally settled down in that area. I went to Georgia Tech for my undergrad, where I studied Industrial and Systems Engineering. I graduated in 2008 and went on to work for Johnson Johnson in one of their leadership rotational programs before I started by MBA program in 2010. Accepted: Why did you decide to attend Washington Olin? Ashley: When I was looking for MBA programs, I had a small list of requirements. It had to be a smaller program. I was tired of being just a number at bigger schools (like a Harvard or a Ross) and was really interested in having a more intimate educational experience. It had to be close to my family. It had to be a top 20 program. So, as I was applying to schools, Washington University naturally rose high on my list. St. Louis is 25 minutes away from my parents and younger siblings in S. Illinois, and its program is relatively small and yet still in the top 20. My older sister went to Wash U for her undergrad so I was already familiar with the high caliber of faculty and students, and I was confident that I would receive a top notch education. Thankfully Wash U and the Consortium also thought I would be a good fit and I was admitted as a Consortium Fellow. All of the pieces were starting to come together so I couldnt turn down such a great opportunity! Accepted: What are some of your favorite things about living in St. Louis? Least favorite? Ashley: My favorite thing about St. Louis is being closer to my family and having easy access to Chicago, where the majority of the rest of my family is. I also enjoy the low cost of living here because as a student I have a very small budget. The cheaper rent, gas, etc. allows me to also have a social life while in grad school. My least favorite thing is that St. Louis is not as progressive of a city as I would like. There is little to no new job creation happening here, causing young entrepreneurs or current graduates to search for jobs elsewhere. Accepted: Whats your favorite class so far? Ashley: Intro to Entrepreneurship/The Hatchery – taught by Professor and fellow entrepreneur Cliff Holekamp. Accepted: According to your LinkedIn profile you are the founder and CEO of Alyssa Vermell Apparel, LLC. Is your post-MBA goal to continue working on your clothing company, or do you have other plans for after your graduate? Ashley: Yes, I will most definitely continue to work on building my clothing line. I am currently in the process of developing my first line of clothing for tall women and I plan to have them in boutiques by the end of the year with a goal of opening my own store in Chicago within the next couple of years. I will also be working as an Associate Brand Manager at Conagra Foods. So I will be quite busy! But all the better, I will do whatever it takes to see my dreams fulfilled. Ashley: At Olin, you can pretty much customize your MBA education. There is a core of classes that everyone must take and there are platforms for marketing, finance, consulting, etc. that one can follow. However, you are not required to select one particular path. You can pick and choose which classes you feel will provide the most well-rounded education, and are not restricted to learning one specific topic. This has especially benefited me as I concentrated in both marketing and entrepreneurship. Accepted: What attracted you to the Consortium program? Is the program living up to your expectations? Ashley: The Consortium was attractive to me because it offered financial assistance to minorities looking to obtain a MBA and was affiliated with some of the countrys top schools. I also liked the vastness of the Consortium network of schools and companies. It reassured me that being a part of the Consortium would provide me with long lasting friendships and network connections. Ashley: Anyone applying to Olin, or any other business school, should first think about WHY they want an MBA and HOW they plan to use it in the future BEFORE they apply. Understanding what you ultimately want to accomplish in the next phase of your life will help you choose the right school that fits your educational needs, write better application essays, and find a better internship and full time employment. If you dont know what you want to do, Id recommend holding off applying to b-school until you figure it out. I am a great believer in Confucianism which advocates for the treatment of those around with respect no matter how much one may think they do not deserve. Handling others the way you would like to be treated is one thing that is also advocated for by a good number of people both in the religious and political realms and also at work( Hayibor, 2017). Interaction with others has only reinforced this traditional ideal. Contrary to what many believe, it is not always a must for one to renounce his or her cultural beliefs when in a country in which he or she falls in the minority (Trueba et al.,2014). A majority of those I interact with belong to the Christian majority and practice what can be simply termed as the Western lifestyle. Most of these people always have something new to offer hence I find myself being keen to learn anything that I can from them. Their beliefs and practices are sometimes very appealing especially the religious celebrations such as Easter and non-religious celebrations or feasts. I have come to appreciate that sometimes these practices that have been passed through generations also define aspects of people's behavior, especially how they behave towards others. I always try to learn some of the aspects of my own culture that peopl e may find conflicting with their own as I try to integrate what I learn into my own lifestyle. Theories have been advanced about what happens when different cultures interact. As per the dominant ideology thesis, it is believed that those whose culture is widespread mostly shape others beliefs through their numbers and influence on entities such as the media (Abercrombie et al,2015). I believe there is a lot that I have come to learn and still appreciate from what I watch. Likewise, I believe that I am influenced those around me especially those whom I communicate with virtually through social media. Sharing cultural information may change the behavior and perceptions of those whose curiosity outweigh their adherence to certain customs (Ferreira and Francisca, 2014). Not only have I understood what is others consider appropriate but have also come to know how to effectively communicate with others and what should and can be said at specific occasions. Sometimes I have found myself on a collision course with other people especially the very religious individuals. I believe in the supernatural, only that my beliefs do not resonate with the majority. When it comes to dressing, I still hold the opinion that it is important to try as much as possible to be decent since it is one way that can encourage upholding morals. My definition of what is decent has been quite what is held by a majority of those I interact with. I, however, tolerate what I do not find appealing for which the majority are comfortable with. Things such as bowing down slightly as a sign of respect during greeting is not common in Australia, whereas it is the norm in China hence adapting has not been entirely smooth. As globalization becomes a reality, people are taking different positions, some aligning their cultural beliefs with those of the majority (Cleveland et al.,2016). Others are however diverging. I believe diverging may not be the best opinion especially for those who live in progressive societies. There might be dire consequences of isolating oneself from the way of life of the majority (Cleveland et al.,2016). Importantly, those who do so may miss on important developments especially when it comes to innovations. Divergence may limit people in terms of accessing new products that may result from the interaction of different people or globalization in general (Chan, 2016). It is true that convergence may lead to the erosion of some cultures. It is the Coyote (Canis latrans) and that is the animal that I have chosen for my Animal Investigation report. The Coyote, also known as the Desert Wolf belongs to the Order Carnivore and Family Canidae. Coyotes are very adaptable mammals often seen in rural and urban habitats of deserts, fields and farmlands. Their thick bushy tail, long pointy nose, and pointy ears make them stand out. Theyre about the size of a German shepherd, but slimmer boned and half the weight. An average coyote weighs about twenty-five to thirty five-pounds and there top speed for running is thirty miles per hour. In winter, their coat grows very thick to help them keep warm. They can be told apart from their larger cousin the wolf and domestic dogs because coyotes carry there tail low when running where wolves and dogs carry their tail high. They mate usually anywhere from January to March and dig a den under a tree, stump or rock. About sixty days later, the pups are born and the average litter size is six, with a range of two to twelve furred, but blind pups. Both parents share in the responsibility of raising the young.
